Solar Power Electricity Rebates Perth

Renewable Energy Certificates

You will receive Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) when buying a solar system. RECs are issued by the federal government to ‘value’ the amount of carbon emissions that your solar panels save over a period of time. Businesses that emit carbon such as coal fired power stations have to earn or buy a certain amount of RECs each year and surrender them to the government, this creates a market for the REC's.

REC’s have a dollar value attached to them and you can sell them. RECs have been traded on the ASX since November 2009, as they are tradable their value goes up and down. When we quote it will reflect the current value of RECs.  Most buyers opt to sell them when they buy the solar system, thereby reducing the out-of-pocket cost. Alternatively you can claim the RECs and sell them later. In both cases we will facilitate the process to keep it simple for you.

Each REC represents the equivalent of one megawatt hour (Mwh) of generated electricity from an accredited renewable energy source such as a solar power system. In Perth a 1Kw solar system generates 21 REC’s. The more northerly parts of Australia receive more sunshine, so the PV system generates more electricity and will attract a higher number of REC’s.

Solar Credits

Put very simply, Solar Credits is the federal governments way of encouraging you to buy a solar power system. Up to the first 1.5kW of solar power they will give you five times the amount of RECs.

OK - 1 kW of solar panels in the Perth region is valued at approximately 21 RECs so 1.5kW of panels is valued at 31 RECs, multiply this by 5 = 155 RECs then multiply this by the CURRENT value that the market is offering for RECs then this is the value of the Solar Credits or put another way, the value of your rebate.

If you install say a 3kW system then:

  • 1.5 kW = 155 x current value of RECs
  • 1.5 kW = 31x current value of RECs
  • Total RECs = 186

Say the market value is $30.00 ea. REC then this equates to:

Solar Credits $4,650.00

Normal RECs $930.00

This means you are entitled to a discount for Solar Credits and RECs of $5,580.
